Hints & Tips

Before we arrive

Please let your neighbours at both your present house and your new home know that you will be moving, and that there may be some difficulties with access for them due to a large removal lorry being parked outside your home. Our vehicles are fitted with end and side loading ramps, and we always endeavour to get as close as possible to the house. If you happen to live on a street with parking permits or metered parking then it is your responsibility to contact your local authority and arrange for the bays to be suspended - approx 4 bays would be a good idea.

If you are doing all your packing yourself then please make sure you have packed everything into suitable cartons and they are taped and labeled well.

If you have any self-assembly furniture, please ensure that they are fully dismantled prior to removal day. Make sure that all loose fixings or parts are packed, it is a good idea to have one box labeled as a BITS BOX for such items.

The contents of attics and lofts should be sorted out before the day and packed as appropriate. Place the packed items into a bedroom or other room.

Video, hi-fi and computer equipment should ideally be packed into its original boxes using the packing supplied by the manufacturer. If you no longer have the original boxes we can supply suitable cartons. All such equipment should be fully disconnected into individual units before the move, as TMTY Movers take no responsibility for any damage or problems that may arise later should our porters have had to disconnect such equipment.

Please make sure that all appliances, such as washing machines and dishwashers etc, are disconnected prior to uplifting by our porters. You should secure the drum of an automatic washing machine with the makers brackets or packing pieces to avoid damage to the machine during the move. Our porters are forbidden to disconnect domestic appliances, especially where the water supply hoses are connected to supplies not fitted with isolating valves.

The contents of your garden shed and garage should be sorted out well before the day, and garden tools bundled together for ease and safety during handling. Take all unwanted items to your local waste disposal point. We regret that we are unable to move any inflammable substances such as paint, thinners, garden herbicides/pesticides, petrol for mowers, etc. and recommend that these are either disposed of prior to the day in a safe and appropriate manner, or alternatively, sealed and transported by yourself. Please advise us well in advance if you have any heavy items, eg, garden ornaments or equipment that you require us to move.

If there is a need for windows to be removed then please be aware that it is your responsibility to arrange for the glazers to arrive whilst your removal is in progress.

It is also a good idea to arrange something for the children to do because we all know how they like to help, but for health and safety reasons it is much better if they don't get under the removal crews feet, this also applies for pets.

When we arrive

The removal crew leader will introduce himself and the crew and if you have any issues i.e: you have cleaners arriving shortly, then if you advise your crew leader
he will make sure the removal is structured around the cleaners.

Please make the crew aware as soon as they arrive if there are items not to be moved.

Once your possessions are loaded onto the vehicle may we remind you that it is your responsibility to check that all cupboards, attics/lofts, garden sheds and the garage have been emptied before it leaves for your new home.

Normally the crew will take lunch on their way to your new home or whilst they are waiting for keys. It is a good idea to swap telephone numbers with the crew leader
so you can inform him as soon as you have access i.e. keys

At your new property have a plan of where you would like your items to be placed and let your crew know. If your boxes are all labeled correctly and the bedrooms are numbered then you will find that your removal crew will put them in the right place.

If you are using our storage

Dispose of unwanted items i.e. give to a charity, do a car boot or hire a skip. There is no point in storing items that you really don't want to keep.

If the fridge or freezers are to be taken into store, please ensure that all inside surfaces are washed down with a strong solution of bicarbonate of soda followed
by drying thoroughly to avoid unpleasant odours.

Make sure everything is labeled correctly and sealed.

No flammable liquids or illegal substances are allowed.

Do not put important documents into store, i.e. passports, driving licences.

Make sure you give your contact details to us whilst your belongings are in storage

Removal Tips

Our best advice is to plan your removal well in advance.

Dispose of unwanted items prior to your move, this may reduce the cost of your removal.

If you decide to do your own packing, use strong boxes and ensure they are not overfilled. Use sufficient protective packing, especially for glass and china. Make sure all boxes are clearly labeled.

Unless you have asked us to do it, dismantle self assembly furniture, take down curtain poles and other fixtures prior to the arrival of the removal team.

Ensure that all items from lofts are sorted and placed in an accessible room.

Ensure that you place all important documents in a folder and keep them with you.

All household appliances should be disconnected and clean prior to the arrival of the removal crew.

Garages and sheds should be sorted well in advance.
